The pendant emits a glare-free downward light, at the same time as it illuminates its own frame, thus creating a soft and pleasant emanation of light from within the center of the pendant. Poul Henningsen designed the PH 5 in 1958 as a reaction to the bulb manufacturers' constant changes to the shape and size of the incandescent bulbs at the time, which in Poul Henningsen's opinion were completely pointless. PH 5 was suitable for all types of light sources with its pleasant light. This made the PH 5 so famous that it later became synonymous with the 'PH light', which to this day still elevates even the most modern interiors – and so does the PH 5 Mini. The smaller version of the PH 5, which was introduced in 2017, is created in accordance with Poul Henningsen's original design with an upper screen of approx. 30 cm in diameter. Henningsen had a scientific approach to light and continued to design fixtures based on the three-screen system he invented in 1925 to create excellent glare-free light. He used the logarithmic spiral as a foundation and achieved a very uniform distribution of light with the three-screen system, which made it possible to control both glare and shadow.
