Hans J. Wegner's CH46 Chair is simple and functional, but at the same time elegant. One senses that Wegner was inspired by the simple chairs of southern Europe and the American shaker movement, and he succeeded in personalizing this inspiration. Ergonomics was an essential aspect of Wegner's designs. A careful balance between inclination and proportion ensured that each chair was optimally suited to the human body. The curved rear legs play an important role in the construction and balance of the chair. The upper part, tilted backwards, ensures a comfortable angle of the backrest, while the angle of the lower part ensures that the chair cannot tilt backwards. The chair seat is braided from paper cord and the two rods of the backrest are laminated from 3 different wood thicknesses, which are then formed into a soft yet taut arch shape. On the front, the armrest has the same elegant curve as the front legs, while towards the back it bends slightly upwards, where it is well fixed at the back between the two bars of the backrest. The legs and armrests have a slightly curved surface. The comfortable armrest, the good support for the back and the hand-woven seat made of paper cord are all integrated into a timeless design that makes the CH46 comfortable and suitable for the dining room, for conference rooms and for waiting rooms. When Carl Hansen & Søn started work on the CH46 in 1966, Wegner also gave them the drawing for a chair without armrests, model number CH47.
