The pendant emits a glare-free downward light, at the same time as it illuminates its own frame, thus creating a soft and pleasant emanation of light from within the center of the pendant. Poul Henningsen designed the PH 5 in 1958 as a reaction to the bulb manufacturers' constant changes to the shape and size of the incandescent bulbs at the time, which in Poul Henningsen's opinion were completely pointless. PH 5 was suitable for all types of light sources with its pleasant light. This made the PH 5 so famous that it later became synonymous with the 'PH light', which to this day still elevates even the most modern interiors. Henningsen had a scientific approach to light and continued to design fixtures based on the three-screen system he invented in 1925 to create excellent glare-free light. He used the logarithmic spiral as a foundation and achieved a very uniform distribution of light with the three-screen system, which made it possible to control both glare and shadow. Each PH lamp number refers to the size of the lamp's shades. The PH 5 is equipped with an upper screen of approx. 50 cm in diameter.
